Age-rekated Changes of Serum Bone Turnover Marker (Osteocalcin, Bone Specific Alkaline Phosphatase and Cross-linked C Telopeptides of Type I Collagen) and the Relationship with Bone Mineral Density in Korean Women

Abstract
Objectives: This study investigated age-related changes of serum bone turnover marker(osteocalcin(OC), bone specific alkaline phosphatase(BSAP) and cross-linked C telopeptides of type I collagen(CTX)) and the relationship with bone mineral density(BMD) in Korean women

Methods: From February 2002 to January 2005 we retrospectively reviewed 905 women aged 30¢¦69 years who had no known diseases and did not take any drugs and operations affecting bone metabolism. OC, serum BSAP and serum CTX(sCTX) were measured to evaluate the state of bone formation and resorption, respectively. BMD was measured in the lumbar spine and femur neck using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA).

Results: The prevalence of osteoporosis increasing decades(4 groups: thirties, forties, fifties, sixties) were 4.5%, 13.6%, 55.3%, 62.0% and there were significantly negative correlation between age and BMD(L-spine and femur neck all)(P<0.001). There were significantly positive correlation between age and all bone turnover markers (OC, BSAP, CTX) specially during perimenopause phase(forties, fifties decades)(p<0.001) There were significantly negative correlation between all bone turnover markers and BMD(L-spine and femur neck all)(P<0.001).

Conclusion: In Korea women, BMD showed a large decline in perimenopausal age(forties and fifties) and all bone turnover markers(OC, BSAP, CTX) were significantly increased according to age increasing and BSAP and CTX were significantly increased in osteoporosis group.
